Choosing the Right Screen Door

screen door

Screen Doors aren’t often the focus of a porch but we’re here to say… they should be! A beautiful, high-quality set of French screen doors can be a focal piece from both the interior and exterior of of your porch. How do you choose the right screen door? Although the sound of a flimsy screen door snapping shut might be nostalgic, we’re in a different time now. Your screen door should have the same quality and durability as the front door of your home.

Our screen doors are unique in that they are 1-3/4″ thick solid wood. Most screen doors readily available at Lowes or Home Depot are closer to 1″. Our doors also have beveled rails (the horizontal pieces on a door) so that if it rains, water wicks off the rails and doesn’t sit on the surface, leading to rot. They have wide side stiles (4-3/4″) for added durability. They are made from solid Sapele, which is an African hardwood that is so similar to Mahogany, that it is often referred to as ‘Sapele Mahogany’ (scroll to the end of this blog to read more about Saple). Our doors also come in many different designs and can be custom-made to fit your opening.

So, how do you choose your style of screen door? We have many different screen door styles available. They can be as simple as our Open Style Screen Door, or as decorative and unique as our Branches Screen Door. Choosing the right style depends on the style of your existing porch, and your personal preference.

If you are purchasing our low-maintenance PVC railings, you may want the design of your doors to match the design of your railing:

OR you may want your door to be a different design than your railing, to make it stand out even more.

You may also want your door(s) to contrast in color from the rest of your porch to make them stand out. Go with a pop of color!

Or a stained door on a painted porch:

The combinations are endless, and there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing your screen door. But hopefully, this blog helped you answer the question, how do you choose the right screen door?

Well, except for the size, you’ll want to get that right! Not sure how to measure or where to start? Give us a call or send us an e-mail, we’d be happy to help.

Why are your doors made from Sapele? And what is Sapele?

We have chosen Sapele to make our doors from due to its many advantageous properties. Here are some key benefits of using sapele for our screen doors:

  1. Durability and Hardness:
    • Sapele is a hardwood, making it extremely durable and resistant to wear and tear. This is crucial for outdoor furniture, which is exposed to various environmental elements.
  2. Resistance to Rot and Decay:
    • Sapele wood has natural oils and a dense grain structure that provide resistance to rot and decay. This resistance is essential for outdoor furniture as it often encounters moisture and varying weather conditions.
  3. Stability:
    • Sapele wood is less prone to warping and twisting compared to other woods. Its dimensional stability helps maintain the shape and structure of outdoor furniture over time, even with fluctuations in temperature and humidity.
  4. Aesthetic Appeal:
    • Sapele has a beautiful, rich reddish-brown color with a fine grain pattern, often compared to mahogany. Over time, it weathers to an attractive silver-grey patina if left untreated, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
  5. Workability:
    • Despite its hardness, sapele is relatively easy to work with. It can be smoothly sanded, polished, and finished, allowing for a high-quality, refined look in finished furniture pieces.
  6. Sustainability:
    • Sapele is widely available and is often sourced from well-managed forests, making it a more sustainable option compared to some other exotic hardwoods. This can be an important consideration for environmentally conscious consumers.
  7. Resistance to Insects:
    • The natural oils in sapele make it resistant to many types of insects, which is beneficial for outdoor furniture that is often exposed to insect activity.

Overall, Sapele’s combination of durability, resistance to environmental factors, aesthetic qualities, and sustainability makes it an excellent choice for our screen doors. Want a sample? Purchase a sample here: https://porchstore.com/store/doors/single-doors/door-sample-kit/
